Frequently asked questions

How do I place an order?

I prefer to receive all enquiries in writing, as I can get several enquiries a day it can be very hard to remember all that we discussed, so it’s much easier to have all details written down. You can do so by using the form on the Contact page. Cakes are priced accordingly to size, flavour and most importantly decorations. The more details you can provide the better!

WEDDING CAKES: For wedding cakes you have 2 options. You can either order via email or you can book to come to one of our consultation days (please see consultaions paragraph below). If you prefer to order via email I will gather as much details as possible about what you would like and put a quote together for you. If you would like to proceed I will then send you an order form. Once received, all you would need to do is fill it in and email back with a £50 deposit within 5 days. The outstanding balance is due one month before the big day.
CELEBRATION CAKES: Once you have received a quote, if you wish to proceed and place an order let us know and I will email you an order form. Once received, all you would need to do is fill it in and email back with a 50% deposit within 5 days. The outstanding balance is due one week before collection.

How far in advance do I need to order?

All orders are subject to availability. I always ask for as much notice as possible, it’s never too early to book!

WEDDING CAKES: Most of our customers book at least 12 months in advance. I do offer a “Save the Date” service for weddings taking place in 12-24 months. A £50 (non-refundable) deposit will secure your date and delivery and we can then meet up 6-9 months before the big day to discuss your design. (Refer to consultation paragraph below).
CELEBRATION CAKES: “Last minute” orders cannot be guaranteed but sometimes they be accommodated, but a minimum of 4 days notice is required. The work carried out is all made-to-order, and there are no pre-made cakes ready to go.  Orders are not confirmed until a 50% deposit has been received.  Please understand that orders often take several days to be completed, so if the deposit is not received in a timely manner, the order cannot be carried through.


Can I come down for a consultation?

WEDDING CAKES- I offer a free one hour long consultation for our Wedding customers 6-12 months before the wedding to discuss their cake design. Please ask me about upcoming dates. This is normally for just the wedding couple, if you would like to bring more than one person please can you let me know beforehand (maximum amount I can accommodate is 3). During the consultation we will sit and talk through your ideas and look through photos to help you choose your design. You are welcome to bring along any ideas and items that will aid with the design process- e.g. Dress photos, invitations, list of flowers etc.

TASTINGS- Free small cake tastings are available at Wedding Consultations for the happy couple. You can also order an additional tasters sample pack to enjoy at home. You choose up to 3 flavour combinations from our flavour range, (excluding fruit cake, this is not available at our tastings). There is a fee of £20 for all cake tasters sample packs which is payable at the time of booking. Samples can be ordered to be collected at your consultation or another time to suit you (subject to availability). The fee is payable at the time of booking.

CELEBRATION CAKES- Unfortunately I cannot offer free consultations for Celebration Cakes. Orders are taken via email. However if you would like to call us and book an appointment to discuss your requirements, a consultation fee of £10 will be charged at the time of booking.

Is your kitchen registered?

Yes. Although Francesca’s Cakes is a home-based business, the kitchen is fully approved and registered with the local council and are subject to random inspections by the Environmental Health Department, we currently hold a 5 star rating from the Food Standards Agency. We also hold a Level 2 Award in Food Safety and liability insurance.

Do you cater for allergies or food intolerance?

Unfortunately we don’t. Although I can provide cakes that are made without any added eggs or gluten. However, as I operate from a kitchen that uses common allergens on a daily basis, I cannot guarantee that there will be no traces present, therefore are not suitable for allergy sufferers.


Since your business is run from your home, can I come at any time to order or collect a cake from you or drop in a deposit?

Please understand that my home is still my private family home.  I run my business from it, but it is not a shop open to the public. Consultations are strictly by appointment only.  Collection and consultation times must be adhered to, if you feel that you may be early or late please get in touch as we may need to re-arrange a new time, as there may be another consultation before or after yours, or I might be otherwise engaged. Payments can be hand delivered at an agreed time or you are very welcome to post it through the letterbox in a marked envelope or posted by recorded post at your responsibility.

Are you more expensive than a supermarket?

Yes! Bespoke cakes are more than ‘just a cake’.  As with anything that is handmade made, the value is greater than you would expect to pay for a cake purchased at a supermarket.  Your product is handmade from high quality ingredients without additives, preservatives and it is designed specifically for you.  There are many hours of work involved in producing a beautiful and quality cake, you will taste and see the difference.

Can you decorate a cake I baked for me?

Unfortunately no. I operate from a kitchen that has been fully approved and registered with the council and all my products need to have been prepared by myself on my premises for traceability and hygiene purposes.
